Mobile devices carry sophisticated software amassing arrays of complex features. Increasingly there is a greater need to manage this software consistently throughout the valuechain and across various geographical regions. Management of the device software at any point in its lifecycle enables:
- ability to deliver and update handset features after sales and customise devices for the channel post-factory
- reduction in time to market and cost for new handsets
- ability to customise the software makeup of the device as it moves through the mobile value chain
Mobile Software Management is a relatively new and still emerging market, both technically and with regard to commercial deployments. Based on over 20+ interviews with software vendors, network operators and handset manufacturers conducted for this report, we understand that at least eight trials of mobile software management technologies are underway as of H1 2007. We expect to see formal vendor licensing agreements for software component management by early 2008, with deployments following in late 2008.
We view software management as the next era beyond the management of the handset configuration and settings. MSM is an emerging, gradually forming solutions market that promises to enable feature customisation and any point in the handset lifetime, not only post-sales but also before it hits the market, as the handset moves across the value chain. New advancements in MSM technologies offer a genuine advantage in reducing the handset time-to-market, containing handset creation costs and decoupling service management from handset delivery.
