Red Bend Software Granted Two More Patents for Mobile Software Management

WALTHAM, Mass., October 13, 2009—Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced the issuance of two new patents by the United States Patent and Trade Mark Office (USPTO) covering revertible and failsafe features of Red Bend’s already patented in-place update methods used for managing software on mobile devices. Both features improve the user experience and enable Red Bend’s customers to reduce support costs and increase service revenues.

U.S. patent number 7,587,433 that was issued September 8, 2009, provides a method for revertible updating. It enables the use of the same update file for both updating the device to a new version and for reverting to the previous version—without the need to download a “downgrade” file. This reduces both memory and transport cost requirements as well as allows the cancellation of an in-progress update.

U.S. patent number 7,599,970 that was issued October 6, 2009, provides a method for failsafe in-place updating (see white paper, “Principles of Updating Mobile Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA)”). It enables the correct resumption of an interrupted update with no additional storage requirements. This feature ensures 100% completion of the update process and eliminates the risk of rendering devices “disabled,” which might cause substantial damages in operation costs and brand name.
