Red Bend Software Continues Mobile Software Management Momentum With New Customers and FOTA Shipments

WALTHAM, Mass., August 31, 2009—Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), today announced that its firmware over-the-air (FOTA) software now reaches 565 million mobile devices worldwide. As of second quarter 2009, Red Bend’s award-winning FOTA software was available in 413 device models from leading manufacturers including LG, Sharp, Sony Ericsson and ZTE. Market research firm Ovum named Red Bend the market leader in FOTA with 60% share of FOTA-enabled mobile phones. In addition, global demand for standards-based device management (DM) software expanded Red Bend’s licensees to 48.

“The mobile industry has been hit by global economic conditions, and analysts point to a second quarter decline in handset shipments ranging from 6 to 11 percent. Yet despite the overall market, our business continues to grow because we enable our customers to open up new revenue streams in apps and services, build brand loyalty with a compelling mobile user experience and reduce customer care costs through software updates,” said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. “I’m also optimistic about the growth coming from connected wireless devices such as PC cards, M2M modules and WiMAX modems. Operators are requiring that all devices on the network be managed in a unified way, and they are turning to Red Bend for our unmatched experience with more than 400 device models across dozens of software platforms.”

Highlights from the second quarter:

  • Japan Embraces MSM: NTT DOCOMO signed a multi-year agreement to license Red Bend’s full portfolio of mobile software management solutions, including vRapid Mobile® for updating firmware over-the-air (FOTA) and managing software components over-the-air (SCOTA) as well as vDirect Mobile™ for device management (DM). DOCOMO will be able to create a consistent, high-quality user experience for software updating and application management across its platforms and devices.
  • WiMAX Turns to DM: Already a significant year in WiMAX chipset adoption with Intel and Beceem announcements in Q1, Red Bend continued the momentum with Fujitsu Microelectronics licensing vDirect Mobile for Fujitsu’s WiMAX SoC and WiMAX chipsets. WiMAX chipset providers are able to offer their OEM customers Red Bend’s pre-integrated and pre-optimized DM software, which is the first with built-in support for the WiMAX Forum’s WiMAX management object (MO) specification. Deployed in tens of millions of mobile devices, vDirect Mobile is the leading independent DM client interoperable with any DM server supporting standards from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA DM).
  • Driving Industry Standards: Red Bend continues to lead the market with promoting OMA DM standards by successfully completing interoperability testing of its DM software in the OMA Enhanced Environment Test last quarter. With the growing adoption of open platforms such as Android, Symbian OS and LiMo, support for mobile standards has never been more important as software providers, mobile operators and device makers look to bring to market innovative mobile user experiences. In June, vDirect Mobile was recognized for “exceptional innovation” by Technology Marketing Corp (TMC).
