MAST Use Cases

Use Case: New Features to Embedded Software (Web Browser)
Partner: Opera
Need: Browsers have become essential for enabling operator services. More mobile services now depend on features supported by the browser, for example, new portals depend on SVG and Flash support built into the browser.
Demonstration: Update the Opera mobile browser over the air to add support for multiple windowing, without needing to update the entire firmware image.
Innovation: Typically a mobile phone's built-in web browser cannot be upgraded over-the-air to deploy feature enhancements, except through a complete firmware maintenance release from the manufacturer. The browser supplier is therefore limited in enhancing the user experience throughout the lifetime of devices in the field. Red Bend's vRapid Mobile enables the built-in browser to be enhanced so that operators can evolve their services independently of the handset release cycle.

Use Case: Operator-Branded UI Customization
Partner: Digital Airways
Need: Operators invest heavily in creating branded user interfaces, from which they offer unique content and deliver mobile services. Operators want the ability to extend their customized UI to all subscribers on their networks.
Demonstration: Customize a generic handset over the air using Digital Airways' Kaleido by transforming it into a mobile phone with an operator-branded UI.
Innovation: Most UI customization capabilities on mobile phones are just "skin deep" – they allow simple change of the background image and colors. To enable a much deeper UI customization—involving entire menu structures, layout, icon placement, etc.—a UI framework has to be integrated with the native functionality of the handset, and at the same time allow for dynamic configurability. By combining such a dynamic UI framework with Red Bend's vRapid Mobile, operators can ensure a consistent user experience across all handsets in their network, and then promote their services via the user interface while building brand loyalty.

Use Case: Multi-Language Messaging Support
Partner: Zi Corp
Need: Some markets such as Europe and Asia require mobile devices that support many languages. However, due to cost, not all language databases can be supported at time of shipment.
Demonstration: Add two language databases to an existing mobile phone using Zi's eZiText® solution, enabling dual language messages (texting words in two languages in the same message).
Innovation: Predictive Text Entry is an embedded software feature that is typically integrated at time of production. Post-production changes to the Predictive Text Entry framework are not possible today, unless these changes are built into a complete firmware maintenance release by the handset manufacturer. Red Bend's vRapid Mobile offers the flexibility to enhance language support either at point of sale or post-sale, potentially increasing text messaging volumes for the operator.

Use Case: Integration with Device Management Servers
Partner: Synchronica
Need: Operators and manufacturers have deployed device management servers to enable over-the-air management of remote devices.
Demonstration: Integrate with standards-based device management servers like Synchronica's Device Management Server to provision software updates in a secure and reliable manner.
Innovation: vRapid Mobile's Software Management Server Application plugs into device management servers compliant with Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Device Management standards. Through integration with the Synchronica Device Management Server, service providers can deploy, manage and maintain a limitless number of software versions for customization down to the individual consumer level.
