Red Bend’s Next-Generation OMA DM Client Makes Managing Billions of Connected Devices Easier for World’s Largest Mobile Operators
vDirect Mobile® 5.0 Provides Faster, Cheaper Solution for Manufacturers to Meet Operators’ Requirements for Standards-Based Mobile Device Management
MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona—February 29, 2012—Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM) with more than 1 billion Red Bend-Enabled™ devices, today announced immediate availability of its next-generation device management client, vDirect Mobile® 5.0, that will enable mobile operators to more easily and efficiently manage billions of increasingly sophisticated mobile phones and connected devices according to Open Mobile Alliance Device Management (OMA DM) standards.
An industry first, Red Bend’s vDirect Mobile 5.0 now offers pre-built DM clients for six of the world’s largest mobile operators: AT&T, NTT DOCOMO, SoftBank, Sprint, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless. That means manufacturers can more quickly and cost-effectively meet operators’ requirements for OMA DM standards, helping the entire mobile industry to more easily manage the billions of new connected devices that will enhance consumers’ daily lives.
The number of total connected devices is expected to skyrocket from 9 billion today to 24 billion by 2020, according to the GSM Association. This explosive growth is a key driver behind mobile operators adopting OMA DM standards for provisioning, configuring and managing the “Internet of things.” Yet each mobile operator has its own unique management requirements, resulting in customized implementations of OMA DM per operator that can add to the cost and time to bring new mobile devices to market.
"Keeping pace with device specs and ensuring interoperability with operators' device management systems is an under-hyped engineering challenge for OEMs," said Andreas Constantinou, Managing Director of research firm VisionMobile. "One-stop MDM solutions, such as Red Bend's vDirect Mobile, help manufacturers to quickly and cost-effectively comply with operator DM specifications. That means fewer devices are misconfigured, customer reps get fewer calls and users access more services out of the box."
The most widely deployed and interoperable DM client used by more than 60 leading companies, vDirect Mobile 5.0 is making it even easier to support OMA DM, with a new product architecture that gives manufacturers the ultimate flexibility with:
- Operator-Specific Pre-Built DM Clients – ready to comply with OMA DM specifications from AT&T, NTT DOCOMO, SoftBank, Sprint, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless (both Verizon’s CDMA and LTE networks), with more operator DM clients to come.
- Generic Drop-in DM Client – integrates with Red Bend’s OMA DM-based Software Management Center to update firmware and manage applications over-the-air, for a complete software management solution.
- Customizable DM Client – for creating customized DM clients for any mobile operator, with a full DM library supporting FUMO, SCOMO and LAWMO as well as platform-specific porting layers that come with a Software Development Kit (SDK) and a reference DM client application.
“Any company in the mobile industry can follow technical standards, but the mark of a leader is driving the development of standards with the needs of customers and consumers in mind,” said Lori Sylvia, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Red Bend Software. “With vDirect Mobile 5.0, OEMs can focus their engineering talent on developing distinctive products in order to stay competitive in this rapidly changing market, while operators can more easily manage the billions of mobile phones and connected devices that will enhance how we live and work.”
