Android version fragmentation is a problem. The actual solution to the Android update problem has been materializing in the background for the last two years and will almost certainly show its face sometime in productized form in 2012. And that’s Android Virtualization... I’ve actually seen Red Bend’s VLX and provisioning combination in beta form and to say that I am extremely impressed with what the technology can do is an understatement. It will do for the wireless industry what Virtualization has done for the Datacenter and enterprise computing, which is to say it will be a game-changer.

ARM unveiled its Cortex-A7 MPCore processor on Thursday, which the U.K.-based chip-maker is claiming to be its most energy-efficient and high-performing ever, offering an extended battery life and possibly paving the way toward significantly cheaper high-end smartphones by 2013. ARM partners, including Samsung, LG, Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN), Red Bend and Sprint (NYSE:S) are already on board to offer the Cortex-A7 processor within their smartphones.

Oct 20, 2011: The Register: ARM chip offers 5X energy efficiency, jacks up performance

ARM already have eight public partners for the licence, including mobile giants Samsung, LG and QNX. The other partners are Broadcom, Compal, Freescale, Linaro, OK Labs, Red Bend, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments. The A7 will be shipping at the end of 2012.
